Artist in Residence 2018-2019

Day 1

Ms. Sharon Fortowsky has joined us at Bridlewood School to support us in our endeavor to create art in the community. Ms. Fortowsky is an artist and one of the things she does is work with kids in schools. Today was day one with rooms 1 and 2. She will be working with all classes as the year progresses. We learned we would be creating a three pieces of art as a school to put on two City of Calgary utility boxes (brain boxes) and the garbage can near the playground. We discussed how perspective, place, and contrast are important when making decisions about our artwork.

A map of possible utility boxes. Ask me which 2 we are going to share our art with the community.

Paying attention to what is similar. Does it blend well? Is the tone and colour close?
Paying attention to what is different. Does it look different? Different colour? Lighter or darker?

Exploring contrast and using our artist technique of squinting and looking through our eyelashes.

Day 2

We looked at some questions to help us think about what message our art should convey to the community of Bridlewood. How would you answer these questions?

  • How does our community take chances?
  • How can we inspire others to take chances and show courage?
  • What is your story of courage?

Day 3

Mrs. Fortowsky joined us again today, April 30th, to continue to help us create art for the community of Bridlewood. Today, we looked at how the illustrator of the book, What Do You Do With a Chance, made the illustrations. We looked at how the illustrator only used watercolour paints and pencil for each of their illustrations.

Mrs. Fortowsky led us through two different techniques when using the watercolour paints on cold pressed paper - the one with a bumpy texture. We practiced a wet-on-wet technique and a wet-on-dry technique.  The wet-on-wet technique required us to first saturate the paper and then load the pigment (a fancy name for paint) on the brush. We gently dabbed the brush on the wet paper. We did this using 2-3 different colours.

We then used pencils of different hardness (2B, 5H, and 4B) to draw
