Hatching Ducks

We have Duck Eggs

We are investigating light and shadow and how farmers use light and shadow to determine the stage and viability of their poultry.  Fingers crossed for healthy baby ducks in approximately 28 days.

Candling

You can use light and shadow to determine the stages of development and the viability of the egg.  Above is a chart that roughly shows the different stages of development.  What do you notice about the eggs?  When is the egg most translucent and when does it become more opaque?  Why does this happen?  Where do our eggs fit on this chart or do they fit on this chart?

Candling

The eggs have been in the incubator since Saturday.  Look at the pictures below and share what you notice?  Have the eggs changed since yesterday's candling?  What has or has not changed?  How old are our eggs and how do you know?

What day of incubation do you think we are on based on the pictures?

Today, April 18th, we saw beating hearts in 4 of our eggs.  Our pictures and videos don't do what we saw justice. We are super excited!

Did you know the egg shell is actually translucent and not opaque? We know this because when we shine a bright light, we can see inside the egg.
