We have duck eggs...

This weekend Ms. Harrison gave us some duck eggs from her friend's farm.  Grade 3 and Grade 4 are sharing these 10 eggs.  We are sharing fairly, how many eggs will we have?

We don't know much about these eggs.  We will be using light and shadow to learn a little about these eggs.  Did you know using light and shadow we can determine if these eggs are fertilized and how old the duckling inside is?  This is called candling.  Can you tell us how candling works?

We are using an incubator to rotate and keep the eggs warm.  Why do we need to rotate the eggs?  What happens if an egg isn't rotated?

Candling Picture

After school today we tried to candle the eggs.  Here are the pictures we took.  Below them is a chart that can help you identify the stage of development.  What do you notice about our eggs?  Are these eggs fertilized- how do you know?  When do you think we should candle again?

We have been working on creating a sustainable city. We were inspired by the book we have been reading, City of Ember. Would you like to live in one of these cities? Do they have everything a city needs? Is anything missing? Can you see how my city would be powered? Can you see how my city will grow food?

A heartbeat!!! Can you see the heart beat? It looks like a flutter. It is tiny and very fast.

Update (April 18, 2019):

On behalf of Habitat for Humanity Canada I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the teachers and parents who encouraged their students to participate in this year’s Meaning of Home contest. Thanks to your support, students across Canada have become advocates for affordable homeownership and have realized the power they have as young people to bring about positive change in their community.

Thanks to the efforts of your students, more families across Canada in need of a hand up will have improved access to affordable homeownership and the strength, stability and independence that comes with having a safe and decent place to live.

We received over 8,200 entries from across the country and our judges are enjoying reading each and every one. We are currently in the final stages of selecting this year’s contest winners and look forward to sharing the results with you on meaningofhome.ca in mid-May.

On behalf of Habitat for Humanity Canada and the families we serve, thank you for your support.
 Sincerely,

April Gibson
